In recent months, we’ve ‘tested the limits’ with QA notables like  James Whittaker, Rosie Sherry and Andrew Muns.  This month, we’re jumping over to the dev side of the aisle by sitting down with Jack Margo, SVP of Internet Operations at Developer Shed . Developer Shed is owned by Ziff-Davis and manages a bunch of tech sites — many devoted to open source technologies and communities.  They serve millions of visitors per month, for every breed of developer. Topics range from troubleshooting an Apache web server to programming a complicated Java application to successfully marketing a website.  Their tagline says it all: “Tools for Geeks!” Today, we talk about what developers really think about testers, Jack’s take on Microsoft vs. open source, the reason he’s mad at Java, why net books are a fad, and which programming language has the biggest upside.  Check back to... ADF UI Shell: Supporting global hotkeys for the activity tabs

We recently had the requirement to provide our users global hotkeys to switch between tabs within the ADF UI Shell (a.k.a. Dynamic Tab Shell) in JDev 11g. Luckily I caught a presentation at Open World this year where Frank Nimphius showed off support for creating global hotkeys in ADF applications. Frank was kind enough to give me his source code allowing me to modify it to suit the ADF UI Shell specifically. The following code shows the general technique for getting global hotkeys workings, as well as specific code to suit the ADF UI Shell implementation. The following code was built and tested under JDev ADF UI Shell Extension – global hotkeys Readers familiar with the current incarnation of the ADF UI Shell will know it has the ability to spawn 1 to 15 "activity" tabs displaying whatever the programmer chooses. This provides an ideal framework for users... (more)

Tips for Efficient PaaS Application Design

On yet another application review with a prospective client the issue of potentially troublesome data entity relationships came up.  A number of our clients are existing QuickBase users who have made an initial attempt to design their applications and find that some assistance is needed.  The first thing we look at to understand their application requirements are the data entity relationships. This is done in the context of both their existing application as well as their general business requirement because often applications are not correctly designed to support the structure of the business information. One of the most common mistakes we see is when application designers build inflexible structures into their applications because of a lack of understanding of relational data.  During the client call mentioned above we saw that they had set up a table of Projects... Has the SUN ORACLE Merger been SideKicked into Reality?

While personally, I believe the Sidekick disaster was just a stumbling block in the embracing of cloud computing for many organizations, today’s news that the newly formed alliance of SUN and Oracle was possibly to blame adds a whole new dimension to the issue. According to some reports the Sidekick service crash involved an Oracle RAC database and Solaris and Linux servers. Currently unlike EMC who were quick to retract the finger pointers, Oracle and Sun declined to respond to the accusations. To put a picture on the background of this scenario one needs to firstly look at the Oracle RAC database, a single database set up which runs across a cluster of servers for fault tolerance, performance and scalability reasons. If reports are to be believed the outage mainly stemmed from the Sun servers which led to the user data being inaccessible in the Oracle database and i... (more)

Citrix Aims To Cripple VMware’s Cloud Designs

Citrix is going to try to bar VMware from getting its hooks deep in the cloud by developing the open source Xen hypervisor, already used by public clouds like Amazon, into a full-blown, cheaper, non-proprietary Xen Cloud Platform (XCP). It intends to surround the Xen hypervisor with a complete runtime virtual infrastructure platform that virtualizes storage, server and network resources. It’s supposed to be agnostic about virtual machines and run VMware’s, which currently run only on its own infrastructure. The announcement will be made Monday in VMware’s own house at the kickoff of the VMworld conference in San Francisco where VMware is expected to show off its new vCloud Express. In varying degrees Oracle, HP, Intel, Novell, Dell, Fujitsu, AMD, NetApp, Juniper Networks, Eucalyptus Systems and GoGrid are backing the effort to realize a complete open source cloud-o... (more)

Componentizing Applications with Layered Architecture

A component is a reusable software entity that is developed and deployed independently. Component based software development has many architectural advantages. In the previous article Componentizing a Monolithic Application in Java, we learnt the need for componentizing applications for getting the benefits of reusability and modularity. In this article let us look at how multi layered application can be componentized. We take the example of a multi-layered POS (Point-Of-Sale) application and understand how the application can be componentized at various layers like presentation, business and persistence layers. Point of Sale - An Example Application Consider a Point-of-Sale (POS) application meant for tracking orders and payments in a restaurant. The POS is used to track the tables being occupied by the guests, orders being made from various tables, and to print bil... (more)

Poor data quality and analytics drive down business value. In fact, Gartner estimated that the average financial impact of poor data quality on organizations is $9.7 million per year. But bad data is much more than a cost center. By eroding trust in information, analytics and the business decisions based on these, it is a serious impediment to digital transformation.

The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...
Predicting the future has never been more challenging - not because of the lack of data but because of the flood of ungoverned and risk laden information. Microsoft states that 2.5 exabytes of data are created every day. Expectations and reliance on data are being pushed to the limits, as demands around hybrid options continue to grow.

The cloud environment has proved to be a major force in transitioning to an agile business model that enables quick decisions and fast implementation that solidify customer relationships. And when the cloud is combined with the power of cognitive computing, it drives innovation and transformation that achieves astounding competitive advantage.
