SCM Microsystems Japan Addresses IT Security

Together with Digital Media Research Institute, Inc., SCM Microsystems Japan and DNP are launching a new solution that keeps important digital data safe using cloud computing technologies. The solution is a high-security data storage system developed by DNP, which consists of DNP's TranC'ert DNA software, a SIM card and SCM Microsystems' @MAXX lite secure smart card reader. Digital Media Research Institute, Inc. is providing sales and consulting services for the implementation of the new system. DNP's TranC'ert DNA software splits up and encrypts sensitive or confidential data, and stores it on three servers, which secures and protects the information from loss, damage or theft.

It seems like just about every cloud computing discussion with a development audience results in the same question being asked: “Why does this matter to me?” As cloud computing first appears to be primarily an operational-centric paradigm, it is easy to understand the reason this is asked. This question can be answered in a variety of ways. Some may say that cloud computing doesn’t affect the developer in any way, while others will say developers need to totally revamp their skill set to cope with the new landscape proffered by cloud computing. Future of Block Storage in the Cloud

I had the opportunity to attend Cloud Computing Conference and Expo last week in the Big Apple. I had a very specific objective: To determine what Cloud Computing really was and, more important, what the future of block storage in the cloud was. I was looking to have a one-on-one with Amazon's CTO Dr. Vogels, IBM's Cloud CTO Kloeckner, and, of course, Sun's Cloud SVP Dave Douglas, which unfortunately did not happen but I believe I was able to grasp all of the essentials I needed, in the three days I was there, to address all of my questions.

The Risks of Over-Virtualization

The computing industry goes in cycles. The latest trend, growing in buzz over the past year, is server consolidation aided by virtualization software. Virtualization software for a computer allows a single machine to behave as though it were many different, separate computing systems; each virtualized instance behaves almost identically to an independent physical machine. Using virtualization software, a roomful of servers can be consolidated onto a single physical box (provided it's powerful enough). Pundits claim this trend is cyclical because it's returning us to the old days of a single large, powerful computer (a la the mainframe) running all of the tasks in an organization. Although the modern consolidated, virtualized server is unlikely to look anything like the old mainframes, it's instructive to examine the virtualization trend in light of this mainframe comparison to see if there are any lessons to be learned.
