WSO2 Delivers Middleware for Heterogeneous SOAs

WSO2 lean middleware is based on re-usable components that provide common services for integration

WSO2 Sessions at Cloud Expo

Cloud Computing Expo - WSO2 announced that it is delivering the first complete middleware platform specifically built to support and extend a heterogeneous service-oriented architecture (SOA).

WSO2 offers a lean approach to middleware that covers the complete requirements of an enterprise architecture, including connectors, mediation and governance, all the way to the executive business dashboard—all available as open source and in the cloud.

WSO2 lean middleware is based on re-usable components that provide common services for integration, transformation, security, governance and management.

This offers a radical break from the complexity, redundancies and inconsistencies of traditional proprietary middleware platforms, which are typically created by assembling separately designed products. The result is a more effective platform that reduces the time to market and speeds enterprise modernization.

“Taking a service-oriented approach can bring new levels of innovation and agility to enterprise IT, but unfortunately developers often find that the complexity of heavyweight SOA middleware platforms actually slows them down,” said Paul Fremantle, WSO2 co-founder and CTO. “With our WSO2 platform, enterprise IT teams find they can quickly deliver projects using just the functionality they need, and over the long term they benefit from a clean, interoperable and effective enterprise architecture.”

Today’s launch of the WSO2 Gadget Server and WSO2 Business Activity Monitor (WSO2 BAM) completes the WSO2 enterprise middleware stack by providing effective dashboards and portals that give business and IT users a clear view into the information they need. WSO2 SOA middleware also includes the award-winning WSO2 Web Services Application Server (WSO2 WSAS), WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (WSO2 ESB), WSO2 Business Process Server (WSO2 BPS), WSO2 Mashup Server, WSO2 Governance Registry and WSO2 Identity Server. (See also the WSO2 Gadget Server and WSO2 BAM press releases dated December 16, 2009.)

“Among our customers worldwide, we have seen a significant move from the use of our individual products toward adoption of our complete middleware platform. Many of our customers are finding that moving off of expensive proprietary middleware has sped up development—enabling them to complete projects that had been stalled for months or even years,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder and CEO of WSO2. “With the launch of our newest products, our platform now offers the full breadth of traditional middleware platforms, such as those from IBM, Oracle and Tibco, while radically cutting the complexity, cost and time to deploy.”

WSO2 Carbon Drives Lean Software Advantage
At the heart of WSO2’s lean software approach to enterprise middleware is WSO2 Carbon, the award-winning, fully componentized SOA platform, which is based on the popular OSGi technology framework. All of WSO2's middleware products are built as a set of pluggable components, allowing developers to deploy only those components they need. For example, bringing mediation to a business process is as simple as adding the WSO2 Mediation feature into the WSO2 Business Process Server, rather than downloading and installing a separate ESB. With WSO2, enterprise IT teams can spend their time integrating systems and building new processes and applications instead of struggling with proprietary, complex middleware. This results in significant savings in project time, costs and staffing.

WSO2 also eliminates unnecessary redundancy because the WSO2 middleware products run on the common Carbon framework, which provides enterprise-class management, security, clustering, logging, statistics, tracing, and other capabilities. The result is that teams and developers are much more productive because the whole platform shares tools, concepts and management interfaces. A unified graphical management console can deploy, manage, and view services, processes, process instances, and statistics across the whole platform. A simple outcome of this approach is a lean, powerful platform that accomplishes the same function as proprietary competitors.
