Videoconferencing to Emerge as a Productivity Tool for the Knowledge Worker

SINGAPORE, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Videoconferencing solutions today is fast moving beyond the confines of the boardroom to emerge as a collaboration tool empowering the workforce. The rapid migration from ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) to IP (Internet Protocol) networks allowing for the convergence of audio, video and web applications further presents videoconferencing as an effective communication tool for enterprises.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.enterprisecommunications.frost.com/ ), Asia Pacific Videoconferencing Endpoints Market, reveals that revenues in this market totaled US$218.0 million in 2004 and is expected to reach US$620.7 million in 2011.

"While keen competition from web conferencing and software application vendors persists, the high degree of convergence between video, audio and web applications is resulting in lesser differentiation between competing products from the various vendors," says Frost & Sullivan research analyst Har Yen Yen.

The implementation of videoconferencing applications on third-generation (3G) networks could also prompt mass-market adoption of videoconferencing at a considerable scale.

A key concern for vendors however is the need to address the end-user perception of videoconferencing endpoints as an expensive communication tool, especially in less advanced countries.

"Nevertheless, this perception is fast changing with prospective clients realizing the efficiency and enhanced communications delivered through videoconferencing," assures Har. "Service providers are capitalizing on this development and are strengthening their networks by deploying infrastructures to prepare for future demand."

While large corporations and the government sector continue to remain the largest verticals in terms of revenue contributions at 82.1 percent of the total market, videoconferencing is gaining acceptance in new areas such as telemedicine/healthcare, education, energy and petroleum verticals, as well as in judiciary courts.

The year 2004 saw a marginal increase in the sales of desktops. Desktop vendors should adeptly tackle downward pricing pressure from software-based and web conferencing vendors by offering desktop solutions as part of a total package.

The desktop systems market offers great scope for collaboration -- a fact that is likely to drive the growth and adoption of videoconferencing solutions.

Simultaneously, the migration towards IP-based videoconferencing continues to grow rapidly due to the availability of inexpensive bandwidth and advanced compression technologies. Presently, more than two-thirds of videoconferencing in Asia Pacific is conducted over IP networks.

Overall, the market, in which the dynamics are progressing toward lower prices, is likely to witness a greater degree of consolidation and acquisitions -- a factor that can reduce the gap between the top tier vendors.

The Asia Pacific Videoconferencing Endpoints Market study segments the market into group and desktop systems. It enables market participants to design strategies and position their services to benefit from the changing market conditions and realize maximum returns on investments. Analyst interviews and executive briefings are available to the press.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
