CIOs’ Vision - Factors in the Cloud Computing Movement

Everyone is talking about cloud

Everyone is talking about cloud and they want to implement the same in their companies. CIOs are the first people who will get the work on this new initiative or change. This article will give them the quick overviews on what all are the factors needs to be considered during cloud movement.

Nowadays companies can consider the option to go with cloud for its internal application infrastructure as it has many positives. The high-level cloud is a very good and emerging technology with more benefits, but in real-time it requires more analysis and study on certain factors.

We needs to consider the listed factors to understand and plan the cloud movement based on the actual infrastructure and application requirements. If we didn't consider the mentioned factors, then there is the possibility to spend more cost compared to current environment and security may be less compared with current infrastructure.

I am just highlighting few major concerns which are broadly suits for all companies who are planning to move in to cloud.

Security
Normally CIOs are considered the COST as first priority but here we are keeping the Security in first place to make awareness that this is more important factor in cloud movement.

1. Data/Information

Securing the confidential data/information of companies in cloud. This needs to be studied and evaluated before the movement.

2. Legal requirement

For certain applications, companies have to fulfill the legal requirement based on the Government regulations. This needs to be analyzed and discussed with management or approval board before the implementation.

3. Authentication

User's secured authentication in cloud environment has to be explored.  This needs to be evaluated and needs to be validated using POC.

Cost Analysis
The most important point from CIO's aspects and below are two major factor's on Cost analysis.

1. ROI
Company needs to analyze the Return on Investment (ROI) for cloud movement. It will help to prepare the investment cost justification along with business case.

2. Billing Model
Company has to analyze the various billing model available with cloud providers and choose the appropriate billing model based on the actual requirement/usage. For example the common cloud billing models are Metered basis and Instance basis.

Choosing the Right Cloud Model
We need to choose the right cloud and cloud service model based on the business and application requirement.

1. Public, Private and Hybrid - Cloud Models
Company needs to analyze and understand the features and benefits of cloud models. They need to choose the right model based on the actual application and business requirement

  • Public Cloud: For Less critical and Less security Application infrastructure
  • Private Cloud: For High critical and High security Application infrastructure
  • Hybrid Cloud: For Combination of Public and Private Cloud Model

2. SaaS,PaaS and IaaS - Cloud Service Models
Company needs to analyze and understand these services and choose the appropriate cloud service based on the actual requirements. These are the cloud service models.

  • SaaS: Software as a Service
  • PaaS: Platform as a Service
  • IaaS: Infrastructure as a Service

Application Requirements
The factors related to application requirements are very much required for successful cloud movement.

1. Expected Response Time
Company has to compare the expected application response time with actual cloud based application response time. Based on this, company will decide on the cloud movement. Normally we will get the better response time in cloud environment but still required an assessment.

2. Expected Availability
Company needs to compare the expected application availability with Cloud application availability. If the cloud availability is matching or less variant with client requirement then cloud movement is possible. Otherwise this needs to be discussed with cloud provider and their infrastructure needs to modify accordingly.

3. Specific Hardware or Legacy Requirement
Company needs to assess and understand the hardware/legacy dependency for applications. In some cases, we may not able to move this kind of applications to cloud, anyhow its needs to be validated with cloud provider for the feasibility in cloud environment.
