Kevin’s Mobile Money News Weekly is an online newsletter made up of the most interesting news, articles and links related to mobile payments, mobile money, e-wallets, mobile banking and mobile security that I run across each week.  I am specifically targeting market size and market trend information.
Ericsson will launch mobile phone banking services, hoping to capture a big chunk of a market it estimates will be worth an annual $27.7 billion by 2015.

Driven by wider smartphone adoption and regular mobile Web use, the number of Americans banking by mobile phone will jump from 10 million today to more than 50 million by 2015.

Facebook, flush with cash, is making mobile a priority and planning to snap up mobile start-ups to beef up its arsenal to compete with rival Google.

Visa Europe has launched the first commercial deployment of its own iPhone payments App. Visa introduced an NFC certification program in December.  In the UK, Visa continues to test NFC based payment systems at its London offices.

Barclaycard, Orange, and T-Mobile have set an early summer date to launch their NCF payment system in which people can make purchases by waving a mobile phone near a payment station.

Apple is reportedly working to outfit the next generation of its smartphone and tablet with NFC technology, which would let consumers use the devices to make mobile payments as an alternative to cash and credit cards.

MasterCard Inc. and Telefonica SA have unveiled a joint venture that will allow the Spanish telecommunications giant's mobile subscribers in 12 Latin American countries to use their phones to make basic financial transactions like paying bills and retail purchases. The new company will develop mobile payment services that will be linked to a mobile wallet or prepaid account.

First National Bank has reported record numbers for its cell phone banking services over the recent holiday season.  FNB reportedly processed in excess of 15 million transactions in December 2010.

Multiple reports are adding fuel to the fire of rumors that Apple’s iPhone 5 will be embedded with a near field communication chip, a move that could shoot mobile payments into the stratosphere.

ShopSavvy Inc. has launched a new version of its Android shopping application featuring crowd-sourced bargains and streaming deals. The application lets consumers scan the UPC, EAN or QR bar codes of products they want to buy and do immediate, in-store price comparisons with local and online retailers.

Mobile payments will approach $1 trillion by 2015 in the United States if retailers receive lower payment processing fees based on a more efficient system, according to projections by International Telecom Strategies’ The Luciano Group.

With corporate behemoths such as Starbucks and McDonald’s leading the way, 50 percent of consumers will have made a mobile payment of some kind by 2014, according to Juniper Research.

For people who just can't enough of the Internal Revenue Service, the federal tax collection agency is coming out with a new phone app.  The app, called IRS2Go, allows taxpayers to track their tax refunds and get tax tips form the IRS.  It's free, and available for people who use iPhones or Androids.

Many consumers are now using their mobile devices to check their outstanding credit card balances or monitor their bank accounts.  With the concept of so-called mobile wallets gaining a foothold in the payment industry, it's no surprise that mobile banking is becoming the norm.

Although few consumers make purchases using their phones, smartphones are playing a critical role in purchasing decisions, according to a study released by ForSee Results. The study, which surveyed 10,000 visitors to top e-retailer sites, found that 11 percent of them made a purchase using their phones this holiday season, compared to only 2 percent at the same time last year.
