Cloud Computing's Trillions & Trillions of Transactions

Open Computing Alliance's Michael Mudd Explains

"We are already beyond the hype and into the adoption cycle for cloud computing, with hundreds of companies and thousands of developers delivering products now," said Michael Mudd from the Open Computing Alliance at a recent Asian Cloud event at the Dusit Thani hotel in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Citing Gartner figures, Mudd spoke of a 25% CAGR for Cloud worldwide through the year 2020--"this means there will be more than 2 trillion financial transactions alone, running on 31 billion devices and 25 million applications," he said.

Mudd added that Gartner estimates there will be 4 billion people attached to the Internet by then, and that according to an IDC/EMC study, the Cloud will require 1.7 zettabytes of storage-that's 1.7 billion terabytes.

He also noted the "accounting discussion" nature of Cloud Computing--companies increasingly buy IT as a service, then expense it as a monthly cost item, rather than buy or lease big iron and big software licenses upfront, then amortize or depreciate them over time.

As a result, Mudd said, "we are seeing a trend in cloud promotion within organizations not only to the CIO, but also to the CEO and CFO."

The OCA & APAC
The Open Computing Alliance, or OCA, is a UK-based global ICT industry policy think tank and advocacy organization.

Michael Mudd serves as its APAC leader, from Hong Kong. He said "OCA members are technology leaders in Asia-Pacific economies, creating a dialog on technology policy, open innovation and competition, open standards, Cloud Computing and Secure & Trusted IT, and Green IT."

"We seek to drive positive outcomes for all stakeholders, both public and private," he said. He noted that the South Korean government in particular was demonstrating leadership. "The 'Korea Cloud' involves several responsible parties and stakeholders, focused on law and regulation, public-sector Cloud and security, as well as standards and R&D in the private sector," he noted.

Stakeholding agencies in "Korea Cloud" include the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), the National Computing & Information Agency (NCIA), the Korean Agency for Standards & Technology (KAST), the Korea Institute of Scenes & Technology Information (KISTI), and the Korea Cloud Services Association (KCSA).

Look out, world!

Disruption, Innovation, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Leadership and Management hear these words all day every day... lofty goals but how do we make it real? Add to that, that simply put, people don't like change. But what if we could implement and utilize these enterprise tools in a fast and "Non-Disruptive" way, enabling us to glean insights about our business, identify and reduce exposure, risk and liability, and secure business continuity?
