Torsion Mobile Selects Des Moines for Headquarters; Begins Work on New Product for the Mobile Web

Known as Project M, New Product From Startup Torsion Mobile to Help Both Consumers and Organizations Better Utilize the Mobile Web

DES MOINES, IA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/22/11 -- Torsion Mobile, a mobile Web solutions company, announced today that it has opened its headquarters in downtown Des Moines' bustling technology corridor. Founded by industry veterans Christian Gurney and Richard Kirsner, Torsion Mobile will focus on solving some of the most challenging mobile Web issues encountered by both consumers and organizations. Known only as "Project M," Torsion Mobile's engineering team is developing a software-as-a-service technology that will eventually improve the convenience of the mobile Web for users of smart and feature phones.

Unlike application-only tech vendors, Torsion Mobile is focused on developing software that will improve the way people can view websites from their mobile devices, regardless of manufacturer or operating system. Conceptualized by Gurney, who operated NASDAQ-listed CE Software, Torsion Mobile will focus on a variety of technologies that will improve the usability of mobile devices in people's daily lives. According to Morgan Stanley, by 2015 there will be more than 1.6 billion mobile users accessing the Internet, more than those using a laptop, tablet or desktop computer for the same reason.

"With the mobile Web forecasted to grow at these astonishing rates, we recognized the importance of creating a startup that would primarily focus on improving the way people use the web through their mobile devices," said Christian Gurney, CEO and co-founder of Torsion Mobile. "The Des Moines' startup scene is one of the most electric and resourceful tech communities I've come to know in quite some time. We're thrilled with the prospects of drawing from this group as Torsion Mobile will require additional staff to accommodate its projected growth."

Pre-Launch Testing
Invitation-only testing of "Project M" will commence within the next 60 days with a select group of participants. Interested marketing, design and Web professionals are encouraged to register on the company website.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
