What Is Network Inventory Software and What Is It For?

They allow an IT-manager to inventory a corporate network in real-time mode

Today almost everyone owns a computer. Every day we have to look after its operation and state, update installed software, and renew the necessary licenses. At the same time, hardware also needs to be constantly audited. All outdated parts that do not meet all growing demands, need to be replaced with more powerful and up-to-date ones. Necessity of such work even with a single personal computer is obvious. But imagine dozens and even hundreds of PCs on the network. Each PC needs to be provided with an essential set of software which should be updated timely; licenses have to be constantly audited. The task is nontrivial, isn't it? Network inventory software will help you to solve this problem quite easily.

For a long time, the network inventory process included a lot of red tape, time-consuming calculations, registration of each small piece of equipment and each program installed on computers. Of course, it cannot be qualified as a comfortable and flexible inventory method. Later, the paper was replaced with Excel tables, but algorithm remained the same. Because of these difficulties, it was quite hard to inventory the network computer park and keep the inventory database up to date.

This situation was far from ideal. But now, there are many software inventory systems available on the market. They allow an IT-manager to inventory a corporate network in the real-time mode, track all the necessary parameters, monitor installed updates, and do many other useful things. In any moment, the system administrator is able to view all the gathered information on software and hardware installed on every particular PC. With a good network inventory tool, you are able to create reports on new hardware effortlessly, and then provide your chief with clear and understandable reports in any convenient format. Network inventory software with the automatic data gathering allows the system administrator to spend less time on the inventory process and increase his productivity, spend more time on other important tasks (deploy new technologies, and increase the network productivity).

Moreover, it is possible to monitor the software that is installed on the workstations in real time, to control whether it allowed or not. With ease, you are able to monitor whether software is used according to its purpose; track possible network vulnerabilities, gather current parameters from miscellaneous network equipment (routers, printers, switches, cameras, etc.) state. All this network inventory software functions are available from the system administrator's workplace, thus he does not have to distract other company's employees.

Like any other automation process, network inventory software increases the efficiency of all the organization, allows an IT admin or manager to build long-term plans of modernization and development the company's information resources based on data of the current computer park's state. Considering the fact that the IT field is very changeable nowadays, the speed and timeliness of gathering the necessary information is vital. Thus, each company that cares about its future successful development has to implement the network inventory software.
