Where Is Data Virtualization Going?

Presenting Data Virtualization’s Logical Next Steps

By now, everyone understands that data virtualization is an agile data integration method used by business and IT to greatly simplify information access.

Compared to other integration approaches, such as data consolidation via data warehouses and ETL, or data replication via ESBs and FTP, data virtualization queries data from diverse sources on demand without requiring extra copies what must be synchronized and supported.

As a result, data virtualization's streamlined approach fulfills business information needs faster, using far fewer resources.  No wonder data virtualization has become the fastest growing segment in the data integration universe.

Where is Data Virtualization Going?
But data virtualization is not static.  It continuously evolves as business needs and technology change.

  • How is data virtualization changing in a world of big data, analytics, cloud, mobile and more?
  • What are the logical next steps in this evolution?
  • And what are enterprises doing today to take advantage?

Data Virtualization Day 2012: The Logical Next Steps is the place to go to get these important questions answered.

Data Virtualization Day 2012
Data Virtualization Day 2012 on October 10, 2012 in New York City is the world's largest gathering of data virtualization experts and implementers.  Set at the InterContinental New York Times Square, this complimentary event is expected to draw more than 200 delegates.

The agenda will include three of the world's leading authorities on data virtualization, data warehousing, data integration and business intelligence, Wayne Eckerson, Rick van der Lans and Claudia Imhoff.   Complementing these analysts will be presentations by executives from three data virtualization adopters, Comcast, Franklin Templeton, and Moody's Corporation.

Why Data Virtualization Is Logical for Business
Wayne Eckerson, a leading thought leader in the business intelligence field for more than 20 years, will discuss data virtualization from the business perspective in his co-keynote. Eckerson is the director of research at TechTarget and founder of the BI Leadership Forum, a research service and online community serving the information and educational needs of BI directors and their teams. Wayne writes a popular weekly blog called "Wayne's World of BI" that focuses on industry trends and examines best practices in the application of business intelligence. His latest book, The Secrets of Analytical Leaders: Insights from Information Insiders, is due out in October.

According to Eckerson, "since most of our data environments are heterogeneous-and becoming ever more so-it makes sense to implement a virtualization layer that presents users and applications with a unified interface to access any back-end data no matter where it's located or how its structured.  A layer of abstraction that balances federation and persistence can do two things that every IT department must deliver to the business: lower costs and quicker deployments."

Why Data Virtualization Is Logical for IT
Rick Van der Lans, managing director and founder of R20/Consultancy, will provide the IT point of view on why now is the time for data virtualization. Van der Lans is an independent analyst, author, and internationally acclaimed lecturer specializing in data warehousing, business intelligence, and database technology.  Van der Lans is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on data virtualization and just published a new book:  Data Virtualization for Business Intelligence Systems: Revolutionizing Data Integration for Data Warehouses.

"Organizations are evolving quickly, thus rapidly changing the decision management processes as well," said van der Lans. "Organizations are challenged today to develop systems that have an agility level that matches the speed with which their business evolves.  Agility is becoming a crucial property of each and every BI system, and data virtualization is key to achieving it."

Analyst Panel - Data Virtualization's Past, Present & Future
Claudia Imhoff, president of Intelligent Solutions and a leading consultant and analyst on data warehousing, business intelligence and analytics, will join Eckerson and van der Lans for an analyst round table discussion. Each will share their thoughts on data virtualization's past, present and future.  Beyond the theory, they will provide their insights on practical strategies for data virtualization adoption.  And they will address audience submitted questions as well.

Comcast on Agile Data Assembly
Peter Armstrong, Comcast Vice President of Management Information Systems will speak on "Data Virtualization and Agile Data Assembly."  Armstrong, with more than 20 years experience implementing and managing information systems to run and improve business processes, will discuss Comcast's customer experience enhancement initiatives and the role that data virtualization plays in enabling rapid assembly of data for decision making.  Armstrong will also highlight how Comcast foresees the role of data in its evolving analytic architecture encompassing big data, warehouses, and data marts in support of agile analytics.

Franklin Templeton on Driving Business Results
Michael McNab, Senior Vice President of Global Business Services at Franklin Templeton will detail "Driving Business Results Through Intelligent Data Consumption."  McNab, responsible for product data provisioning and with a current focus on data federation and virtualization, will provide a business sponsor's perspective of the many benefits-both anticipated and unanticipated-realized from data virtualization and will also share insights on lessons learned, success factors, and thoughts on some emerging opportunities.

Moody's Corporation on Next Generation Information Demands
Brian Clark, Managing Director, Chief Technology Officer at Moody's will speak on "Meeting Next-Generation Information Demands."  In his role, Clark is responsible for creating revenue opportunities and efficiencies through architecting, adopting and overseeing the use of innovative strategies and technologies to introduce new products, reduce costs and improve customer satisfaction.  Clark will describe how Moody's is transforming its Information Architecture to ensure alignment with business,  enable straight through processing, and increase efficiencies and speed to market with the use of technologies such as data virtualization and big data solutions.
