Oracle’s Java certifications are designed to be focused on particular roles in the software development cycle and, therefore, are more useful than all-in-one certifications.

Oracle currently offers the following Java certifications, which are classified by level and specialization. Most of the certifications require you to pass a multiple choice exam, but some require you to complete an assignment plus an essay exam.

The Java certification program consists of following exams based on platform and levels:

Java SE Programmer exams - The Java Programmer exams tests the candidate's Object Oriented Concept knowledge of the Java language and basic application programming interface (API) packages. The latest exams from Oracle are OCA Java SE 7 Programmer I Exam and OCP Java SE 7 Programmer II Exam.

Java ME Developer exams - The Java ME Developer exam tests the candidate's J2ME knowledge to develop mobile applications. OCP Java Programmer certification (any version) is a prerequisite to take Java ME Developer Exam.

Java SE Developer exam - The Java SE Developer exam is different from programmer exams and it tests the candidate's ability to complete an extended programming assignment and answer questions about issues and trade-offs involved in completing the assignment. OCP Java Programmer certification (any version) is a prerequisite to take Java Developer Assignment Exam.

Java EE Architect exam - The Java EE Architect exam style is similar to developer exam but it requires you to complete 3 steps. The exam tests candidate's architecture knowledge required to design Java EE applications using best practices and patterns.

Step 1: You have to complete multiple choice exam.
Step 2: You have to submit architecture solution for the given business problem.
Step 3: Justify your architecture solution by answering few questions.

Java EE 5 Developer exams - These exams are based on Java EE Tier Components.
Web Component Developer exam to tests JSP and Servlet knowledge.
Business Component Developer exam to tests EJB and JPA knowledge.

Java EE 6 Expert Exams - These exams are based on components instead of Java EE tiers. Note that in Java EE 5 developer exams EJB and JPA is combined in single exam whereas in expert level it is divided into two.

OCE Web Component - Tests Java EE 6 JSP and Servlet changes like annotations, asynchronous request processing, etc.
OCE EJB - Tests new changes like Singleton Session Beans, timer improvements in EJB, asynchronous session beans etc.
OCE JPA - Must focus more on criteria query API along with other exam objectives.
