Best use of the Oracle Database Applicance Virtualized Platform

odaPerhaps one of the most ingenious things available in the Oracle Database Appliance launched recently is the virtualization option in the system. Using the virtualized ODA, also known as the ODA virtualized platform, you can run a number of virtual computers while maintaining efficiency by hosting various architecture tiers within one database appliance. No wonder this reformation has garnered the applause of users all over the database admin community.

When you need to manage a multi-tier system, which has been the traditional approach so far, you can go for this kind of a setup to reduce costs drastically. If the main purpose is to consolidate many systems or networks into one single system, the virtualized platform can incorporate that as well. The best part is now you have one platform that can be very easily setup, can be operated on and managed by even entry level operators. A number of virtual servers can be supported remotely in a way that a single environment can host everything from database to application logic tier and support options like security servers and a load balancer. This new technology is so much better than its predecessor that some independent software vendors are already building and launching systems that are tailor made for operations with one single database appliance.

The ODA virtualized platform with V1 hardware can be used Oracle Appliance Manager (OAK) 2.5 and in case you have the 2.5.5 OAK version, you are good to go with the ODA X3-2 hardware. Sometimes, systems are shipped from the factory with non virtualized ISO image setups. If you are on a non-virtualized setup with the Oracle Database Appliance then you need to re-image the server with an ODA virtualized platform ISO image. This process does not take more than a maximum of two hours without errors. Once you have handled that bit, the Oracle Appliance Manager will let you deploy a domain called ODA_BASE domain, where you can host all your databases. Depending on the available database licenses as well your current requirements, you can allocate the required memory to this new ODA_BASE domain.  Thus, you can clearly see how ODA virtualized platform is a clear winner when compared with its earlier version.
