Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust uses application analytics for Windows 7 Migration Project

- SaaS-based Software License Optimisation solution WorkSpace iQ delivers "most impressive" PoC results

Centrix Software, the innovative provider of workspace management solutions, has been selected by the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust to provide its WorkSpace iQ system for the Trust's 6,000 users. As part of the Trust's Windows XP to Windows 7 migration project the software will be used to help the Trust create an accurate inventory of its desktop software and analyse which of the several hundred applications are actually being used. The ultimate goal is to get ready for the migration to Windows 7 and drive software licence efficiencies to support Software Licence Optimisation, auditing and licence compliance. In addition, they will be able to consolidate licences and create an application installation process based on user groups through an active directory group tailored individually for each user.

Desktop transformation specialists, Esteem Systems, introduced Centrix Software to the Trust as part of a broader Windows XP Migration project including desktop transformation consultancy, application packaging, application migration and desktop deployment.

The solution was delivered using Centrix's SaaS technology removing the need for The Trust to set up their own infrastructure and providing access to the analytics almost immediately.

Centrix was chosen for the solution over Snow Software, following a successful Proof of Concept (PoC). Richard Wakefield, Desktop Services Manager, IM&T at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, was impressed with the quality of the reporting, commenting that the level of detail and ease of data access, including the volume of data available, was "the most impressive that I've seen out of a software solution since we implemented Citrix Edgesight."

Commenting on the migration project Wakefield added, "Through manual methods we had already established that approximately 300 pieces of software were currently available to our users, but we needed to know which were really being used in order to decide which apps to migrate to Windows 7." He continued: "I was conscious that unused software apps could become an issue preventing rollout and under the advice of Esteem, I felt confident that Centrix Software's WorkSpace iQ solution could provide the information we needed in time to meet the migration deadline".

"Esteem is a long standing partner of the Trust and we're currently working closely with them to help migrate their 6,000 users to Windows 7. As part of the project we identified that accurate software asset management was a key element of the migration project and based on our previous experience, we recommended Centrix Software to the Trust," said Alastair Kitching, Group Sales & Marketing Director at Esteem. He concluded: "Initial results have already shown that this was the right choice, enabling the overall XP Migration project to stay on track".

"We're delighted to be working with the Salford Royal NHS Trust to provide accurate software license and real-time usage data that will enable an efficient and effective migration to Windows 7," comments Lisa Hammond, CEO at Centrix Software. "With our WorkSpace iQ SaaS model, we are committed to providing customers with rapid and cost-effective access to the insight and intelligence they need, to make an informed decision about which applications to migrate before the April 2014 deadline for end of Microsoft Windows XP support."

As well as driving efficiencies in terms of software licence rationalisation and cost optimisation for this project, Richard sees WorkSpace iQ as "providing other senior management with greater visibility of application usage data, increasing the ROI of software investment throughout the Trust."

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
Smart cities have the potential to change our lives at so many levels for citizens: less pollution, reduced parking obstacles, better health, education and more energy savings. We are given a desktop platform with Java 8 or Java 9 installed and seek to find a way to deploy high-performance Java applications that use Java 3D and/or Jogl without having to run an installer. We are subject to the constraint that the applications be signed and deployed so that they can be run in a trusted environment (i.e., outside of the sandbox). Further, we seek to do this in a way that does not depend on bundling a JRE with our applications, as this makes downloads and installations rat...

In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
Digital Transformation (DX) is not a "one-size-fits all" strategy. Each organization needs to develop its own unique, long-term DX plan. It must do so by realizing that we now live in a data-driven age, and that technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, the IoT, Cognitive Computing, and Blockchain are only tools. The IoT Will Grow: In what might be the most obvious prediction of the decade, the IoT will continue to expand next year, with more and more devices coming online every single day. What isn’t so obvious about this prediction: where that growth will occur. The retail, healthcare, and industrial/supply chain industries will likely see the greatest growth. Forrester Research has predicted the IoT will become “the backbone” of customer value as it continues to grow. It is no surprise that retail is ...
