LabStyle Innovations Corp., developer of Dario, a cloud-based, mobile health platform for diabetes and related blood glucose monitoring, announced the official European launch date for the Dario iOS mobile application. Customers will be able to experience the novel functionality and benefits of Dario's iOS app, no matter what blood glucose monitoring device they are currently using, by manually feeding in the information. The IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics recently reported that Apple's U.S. iTunes store now carries over forty thousand health-related apps in English. However, mHealth is much broader than consumer apps on iPhones. It includes apps sponsored by hospitals to manage patients after discharge; and passive, remote monitoring of patients, as well as many other applications – even those not yet invented.  Read Original Content

Because of mobile health apps and home monitoring, physicians will eventually see patients far less often for minor acute problems and follow-up visits than they do today, said three doctors from Scripps Health in a commentary in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Hipcricket, Inc., the one-stop mobile advertising and marketing company, announced it has teamed with longtime client Internet Sexuality Information Services, Inc., a national nonprofit organization based in Oakland, California, to provide mobile mHealth services via SMS text messaging, email and voice to Oregon residents so they can manage and prevent transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.  Read Original Content

Mobile phone texting can prevent a high-risk person from getting diabetes, says a study published by Dr. Sudhindra Kulkarni. The study involved 537 men aged 35 to 55 years across India who were at high risk of developing diabetes and were followed up for two years. The researchers prepared 60 to 80 messages for each stage and these were delivered cyclically, diminishing the possibility of receiving the same message twice in six months.  Read Original Content

In a project dubbed Amulet, Dartmouth and Clemson are designing a fashionable wearable body area network that essentially serves as a health management hub that collects data from various health monitors.  The jewelry could be used to collect data from such devices as a glucose monitor or a treadmill, according to David Kotz, a computer science professor and the Amulet project lead at Dartmouth.  Read Original Content

Tracking the seasonal flu is an onerous task. To accomplish it, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compiles and analyzes reams of data.  Google Flu Trends, which compiles Internet searches related to flu, can often predict CDC findings one to two weeks in advance.   At the University of Wisconsin–Madison, infectious diseases researcher Ajay Sethi and doctoral candidate Christine Muganda saw the results of Google Flu Trends and made an app called OutSmart Flu.  Read Original Content
