Embracing the New Enterprise IT: Server Virtualization

Business of all sizes leverage advanced VPS technology to remain competitive

Virtual servers are rapidly becoming more popular than physical dedicated servers for a variety of reasons. A virtual private server (VPS) acts like a dedicated server in all respects on a software level while allowing multiple servers to be run on a single physical machine. Since most servers aren’t used to their full capacity, this is a cost-effective solution that provides many technological benefits.

How virtual private servers fit into the new IT landscape
Current information technology is allowing companies of all sizes to take new approaches to how they handle their data centers. VPSs that are hosted remotely can replace a dedicated onsite server, moving companies towards decentralization and away from a reliance on in-house technology. Additionally, small and medium-sized companies are now finding that they require technology to remain competitive. VPSs allow them to leverage advanced technology regardless of their budget. Additionally, new self-managing solutions such as autonomic computing can further reduce a company's administrative costs.

The background of virtual private servers
VPSs have been in use since 2001 but have become increasingly more feasible with advances in server technology. As the physical resources contained within a single server grow, so does a server’s capability to support multiple virtual servers. Traditionally, virtual servers have been used to create redundant servers, consolidate servers and run multiple types of servers on a single hardware system. Today VPSs are in direct competition with shared hosting services and dedicated hosting services.

Moving enterprise to virtual private servers
Companies that are interested in migrating from on-site servers to VPSs are likely to be surprised at how simple the procedure is. Some companies may even want to operate both systems in tandem briefly to ensure that the switch is done seamlessly. A VPS hosting service will often be able to assist a company in its migration needs, and often there will be tools provided specifically for this purpose. Although enterprise cloud hosting options are available, they usually aren't as secure as a VPS hosting plan. From a budget standpoint, VPSs also have more predictable billing cycles.

The major advantages of virtual private servers
One of the advantages of implementing a VPS is that it’s easy to deploy, simple to manage and very reliable. When compared to other types of servers, a VPS is also extremely secure. Companies that want an inexpensive, safe and easy-to-maintain solution will likely find everything they need in a VPS. Shared hosting services are not as secure as a VPS and they don't offer as many resources. Meanwhile, dedicated servers are much more expensive and they usually aren't necessary. On-site solutions are also pricey, and most small to midsized companies truly don't need all the benefits that a dedicated server will afford.

VPS hosting is the perfect solution for companies that have technology needs that fall between dedicated and shared hosting services. Companies interested in VPS hosting will find that it offers them the opportunity to reduce their overall costs while giving them additional flexibility not available through on-premise technology.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
