When Ralph Kimball Speaks People Listen: Hear what the father of the data warehouse has to say about Apache Hadoop

By Bob Gourley

Ralph Kimball is highly regarded in the technology community. He is a fantastic author, great speaker, passionate teacher and a proven innovator. Many of us consider him the father of the data warehouse and he has been driving innovation in that field for years. His approach to dimensional modeling (known as the Kimball methodology) is currently the de facto standard in most enterprise decision support systems.

Ralph Kimball has some thoughts on Apache Hadoop and will be sharing them during a webinar Wednesday 2 April 2014 at 1pm eastern. Register for the webinar and receive a free guide to dimensional modeling from his latest book.

Building a Hadoop Data Warehouse

Hadoop 101 for Enterprise Data Warehouse Professionals

Online Webinar | April 2, 2014 | 10AM PT / 1PM ET

Dr. Ralph Kimball will describe how Apache Hadoop complements and integrates effectively with the existing enterprise data warehouse. The Hadoop environment’s revolutionary architectural advantages open the door to more data and more kinds of data than are possible to analyze with conventional RDBMSs, and additionally offer a whole series of new forms of integrated analysis.

Dr. Kimball will explain how Hadoop can be both:

  • A destination data warehouse, and also
  • An efficient staging and ETL source for an existing data warehouse

You will also learn how enterprise conformed dimensions can be used as the basis for integrating Hadoop and conventional data warehouses.

Complimentary Chapter

The Data Warehouse Toolkit, 3rd Edition: The Definitive Guide to Dimensional Modeling
Chapter 21: Big Data Analytics

Ralph Kimball and Margy Ross co-authored the third edition of Ralph’s classic guide to dimensional modeling. It provides a complete collection of modeling techniques, beginning with fundamentals and gradually progressing through increasingly complex real-world case studies.

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
