10 Stats That Show Your Business Needs to Go Mobile

Is your business reaping the rewards?

Mobile is here to stay; is your business ready?  Here are some eye opening statistics to justify an investment in an improved responsive web design, mobile app and functionality designed to create an amazing experience for smartphone users.

Mobile Browsing

Roughly 65% of adults in the US and UK own a smartphone, and a third of those use it as their primary device to access the internet. In fact, for over 7% of adults their phone is the only way that they access the internet.

Data supports the assumption that this trend will only continue in future years, with over 90% of American teens (your future consumers) using their mobile device to browse the internet.

Customer Service

60% of consumers regularly seek support from businesses through their mobiles, and the same percentage have a better opinion of a business if their self-service troubleshooting system is mobile-responsive.

90% of those people say that they have had a poor experience attempting to get customer support through their mobile. That's bad news if your company's support systems aren't mobile-friendly, but an excellent opportunity for businesses to beat out their competition by investing resources into this area.

News

A survey of over 20,000 individuals around the world revealed the smartphone as clearly "the defining device for digital news" with 66% reading news on their mobile and almost 50% of people relying on their mobile device for their weekly news.

If your audience relies on your website for regular information and commentary about industry news make sure that you have a great mobile app and deliver a mobile version of your website that is easy to read on all types of smartphones and tablets.

Purchases from Mobile

Mobile commerce, or "m-commerce" is growing 300% faster than e-commerce. In 2014 consumers spent over $200 billion on purchases made from their mobile devices. While the lion's share of this went to big players such as Amazon, Apple and QVC it indicates a change in the way that consumers are shopping. Make sure your business capitalizes on this growing trend with a mobile responsive retail website.

Location Based

Over 80% of consumers use their mobile to access information about their surroundings such as directions, shopping recommendations, restaurant reviews and event listings. What's more, the use of these location based features is not skewed towards younger generations in the way that some other mobile functions (such as music and video play or online shopping) are.

App Usage

You'd be forgiven for assuming that an increase in mobile internet access means an increase in app usage. After all, these programs are designed specifically to deliver the best possible interaction with a brand, right? Rand Fishkin's research indicates that this might not be the case.

Most mobile users only rely on a handful of apps - a fraction of usage compared to mobile browsing. "Some sources are showing that just the top 5 apps are responsible for 80% to 90% of all app usage."

In other words, a mobile responsive version of your website is far, far more important than developing an app.

Is your business taking advantage of an increase in mobile use to grow? If not, it's time to rethink your online marketing strategy!
