Core, Mobile, Client Side, Server Side: Java Technology Track Will Take Your Skills to the Next Level

(December 13, 2002) - As a Java developer, you can't afford to miss the JDJEdge 2003 East - International Java Developer Conference & Expo. The Java track has been specifically designed to allow you to squeeze as much information out of each session as possible. This is a Java track for the Java developer, delivered by top-notch speakers and authors. Not a track for the beginner or the novice, this track is designed for the experienced developer who wishes to catch up on the latest techniques and APIs. Here's a preview of the Java sessions at the conference, which takes place at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center, in Boston, MA on March 18-20, 2003.

Starting at the language core, we'll explain how improving some of the small things can make a huge impact on your overall development. Tips and tricks from renowned experts will result in fewer bugs, less time spent chasing problems, and generally cleaner code. In a bid to produce bug-free code, we have a session dedicated to JUnit, explaining how this great tool can really reduce the number of errors before they can even raise their ugly heads.

Everyone has to compile, and there's no better tool for pulling together your environment than Apache Ant. We'll be taking a detailed look at how you can benefit from this tool.

Many of us don't have the time to keep up-to-date with the latest introductions at the API level. Well, fear not. A number of sessions explore the new features of JDK1.4 and J2EE 1.4.

Contrary to popular belief, moving to .NET doesn't mean you have to abandon Java. We'll show you the tricks that J# has to offer you, and why it?s a great choice if you find yourself having to produce some applications that are .NET-concentric.

One of the tools that the JDK1.4 has brought to the table is XML processing. We'll tell you how to harness the power of XML for use in and out of your Java environment. In addition, we'll explore SOAP and how you can leverage the power of this Web service protocol to supercharge your applications, both client side and server side.

Speaking of client side: IBM's SWT, positioning itself as an alternative to Swing, has been getting a lot of press recently. We'll be taking an in-depth look at what SWT has to offer, and evaluate its advantages and disadvantages.

With the availability of Java on phones and other mobile devices now, you're probably itching to start developing some J2ME MIDlets. If you have started, you may be surprised at how much of the standard Java isn't available to you. We'll be looking at this, and how you can code around some of these obstacles.

As you can see, the Java track has been designed with you, the Java developer, in mind. We know you don't have a lot of spare time, and we've designed the track to maximize your time and arm you with the all the necessary tools to take your development to the next level.

Core Java

[JV1] Squeezing the best out of Java
Java is a very powerful language, and while it offers the developer a rich array of tools, the fundamentals mustn't be overlooked. Improving your code at the core layer will result in great improvements in efficiency and producing fewer bugs. We'll look at the dos and don'ts of programming and learns lots of hints and tips that will accelerate your Java coding.

[JV2] Testing your Java the JUnit way
You can never have enough testing; yet the majority of Java developers never test code thoroughly enough. JUnit is one of the more popular open-source tools available to facilitate a very comprehensive testing framework.

[JV3] Building/Deploying the Ant way
One of the great tools for managing your complete development environment is Apache's Ant. Ant does more than just coordinate the compilation process. Ant can also manage deployment, testing, and executing. No matter which IDE you're using, you can still benefit from Ant's ability to keep it simple.

[JV4] Unlocking the secrets of JDK1.4
With the release of 1.4, a number of new features were added to the core API, such as non-blocking IO, regular expressions, assertions, and XML. This session will take you through the major additions and demonstrate where you may use them.

[JV5] Java and .NET
Contrary to popular belief, you can still use Java (J#) on Microsoft's .NET platform. While the flavor may not be the latest JDK we know and love, J# offers other goodies and trinkets to accelerate your .NET solution. Find out what they are.

Client Side Java
[JV6] To not Swing is to SWT! The Swing Alternative
With the release of Eclipse, IBM has been quietly promoting the power and performance benefit of SWT over and above Swing. Discover what all the noise is about SWT, and how it can accelerate your client experience.

[JV7] Talking back to the server; the SOAP way There have always been a plethora of techniques for communicating with servers; but none have been as powerful and flexible as SOAP. SOAP opens up the world of Web services, enabling you to talk with non-Java servers in a fast, secure manner. Discover how to SOAP up your applications.

[JV8] Unlocking the power of XML There is more to XML than just one block of String. Understand the difference between a DTD and a schema and the APIs you can utilize within Java that will bring the power of XML to your Java development.

Mobile Java

[JV9] Moving around the limitations of J2ME
J2ME has brought the power of Java to the mobile space. However, not all the JDK is available to you. Discover what is and what isn't available, and how you can potentially work around some of what seems to be "must have" tools.

Server Side Java

[JV10] Writing SOAP services
How do you expose some or all of your methods as Web services? By making them SOAP services. Discover the tools available to you as a Java developer and learn how easy it is to start enabling your existing and new applications as Web services.

[JV11] Working with data the JDO way
Java Data Objects is an alternative way of looking at your data compared to JDBC. Looking at your data in an object orientated way has many advantages over the sequential manner of JDBC. Learn what JDO through practical examples that can be adopted for your own requirements.

[JV12] Enterprise: The next generation
With the latest release of the J2EE 1.4 framework, a whole new suite of APIs have been added to this already comprehensive edition. Chances are, there are goodies lurking in there you didn't even know about. This session will take a look at unearthing some of the gems of the J2EE framework.
