SOA Vendor BEA Presents at JavaOne

Guy Churchward Onstage with Intel to Outline Java Contribution

BEA's Guy Churchward, vice president of WebLogic products, appeared with Intel corporate vice president, Renee James at a keynote session entitled "Intel Rocks Java Technology" at the recent JavaOne 2007 in San Francisco. The session highlighted both companies' contributions to Java "and how each company is pushing the technology to new heights," according to BEA.

Churchward highlighted the relationship between BEA and Intel with a particular focus on both companies' efforts to ensure the highest level of performance of BEA's JRockit on Intel Xeon and Itanium servers.

Prior the event, Churchward had spoken extensively about BEA, Java, SOA, and virtualization. Noting that the company's WebLogic Server Virtual Edition software will be available in early June, he said that the release will be followed by WebLogic Liquid Operations Control in the third quarter of this year. Churchward said his company sees SOA and virtualization fitting together like hand and glove.  "Our customers were saying that they need to get better server utilization," he noted. "They literally said to us: 'You are the Java experts. Figure out how to make Java play better in virtualization, because it sucks.'"

The first version of WebLogic Server Virtual Edition will run on top of VMware's virtualization platform. BEA says it offers a lightweight custom-built operating system tailored towards running a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Because this Liquid Virtual Machine is tailored exclusively towards running Java applications, it requires 20 to 30 percent fewer resources than a general purpose operating system such as Linux.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
