Advantages of Java 6.0, Dreams of Java 7.0

Perspective on "Real-World Java Seminar," 13 August, 2007, Roosevelt Hotel, New York

The "Real-World Java Seminar" has been described as the best Java education opportunity on the East Coast and it started on August 13 in New York City at 7.00AM and ended at about 8.00PM. The use of Java and related platforms for advancing technology through software development featured lavishly under the guidance of JBoss, etc. Code Gear from Borland, Nexaweb, Microsoft, etc. made prominent presentations on their advancements, particularly paying attention to interoperability of their technologies.
As a participant in the seminar, my observations represent only a perspective. The advantages of Java 6.0 over previous versions were compared and highlighted, and a subsequent presentation and demonstration by CodeGear extracted the utility of Java applications. Similarly, the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) was presented as a live wire of Service Oriented Architecture in the implementation of Java. In the same vein, EJB3, Spring and Hibernate were comparatively reviewed and the analysis ended with recommendations on relative advantages.
When the presentations and demonstration on recent advances in JBoss, a division of Red Hat, took place, participants were gladdened to note that a beta version of Red Hat Development Studio (RHDS) had just been released and this could be downloaded from www.redhat.com/developer.  Incorporating Eclipse-based tooling for their technologies for Enterprise Application Platform, the Red Hat team pointed out that v.4.2 of the platform covers AS Release, Hibernate, EJB3 and JBoss Seam, etc. This may be applicable to Service Oriented Architecture Platforms as well as Portal Platforms. The utility of testing new applications over the internet and the testing of applications across platforms were mentioned.
Presentations and demonstrations on Nexaweb, JBoss, Apache Axis, Bpel, Spring, Hibernate and Adobe Flex were illuminating and brought out new lines of developmental thought and applications using these technologies. AJAX Assembly Mechanism was presented in such a way as to bring out its role in performance, extensibility and reliability for mission-critical development. Developers were encouraged to adopt and exploit these advances in applied technologies for the development of enterprise.

The Microsoft presentation on .NET and Java interoperability in the Enterprise fascinated participants and elicited a strong interactive session in which participants were gladdened to note that some web sites offer technologies for interoperability. These are particularly useful in global business communities characterized by corporate mergers, re-organizations and re-modeling. Here, previously existing corporate enterprise mechanisms including input/output formats for administration, production, accounting and returns on investment, will have to be reconciled in the new enterprise model.

Towards the end of the long day, a power panel of four technocrats was hosted by Jeremy Geelan. Their discussion examined the future and the potentials for these recent advances behind the hardware such as computer, telephone, internet and others. Rima Patel Sriganesh did not hesitate in painting a dream of Java 7.0 (aka “Dolphin”) also for the future.

There were plenty of coffee breaks with a sumptuous lunch to match. Thanks, on behalf of myself and all the other delegates, to SYS-CON Events!

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
