Top Business Leaders and Influential Writers at BEA Executive Symposium Discuss Characteristics that Make Leaders, Organizations

(New York, NY) — Tom Brokaw, anchor and managing editor of the NBC Nightly News, was a featured speaker at the Third Annual BEA Executive Symposium, on December 12, 2001, in midtown Manhattan. Presented by BEA in cooperation with the Harvard Business Review, this invitation-only event was themed, "Staying Power: Leadership That Makes a Lasting Impression." More than 500 executives gathered to hear some of the world's most effective business leaders and influential business writers share their hard-won insights on staying power and great leadership.

"BEA is all about helping our 11,800 customers enhance their staying power," said BEA founder, president, and CEO Alfred Chuang. "In turbulent times like these, companies must look long and hard at what works and what doesn't, and adapt accordingly. In the Third Annual BEA Executive Symposium, we are bringing together some of the best minds in business to explore the relationship between staying power and transformative leadership. Our hope is that our guests will not only gain valuable insights, but will take away knowledge that will help them take their companies to the next level."

In his Symposium speech, titled "Reflections of a Newsman: Ingredients of Staying Power for a New Generation," Brokaw drew on his deep historical knowledge, as well as his 35 years of experience reporting on breaking news and world events, as he discussed the personal and professional qualities that embody Staying Power for today's generation as it faces the challenges of a drastically changed world.

James B. Lee, Jr., vice chairman, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., was also a featured speaker. In his presentation, titled "Knowing When to Hold and When to Fold: The High-Stakes Betting of Investment Banking," Lee discussed his criteria for evaluating investment opportunities, and how the character of the principal players can serve as the best guide to a client's staying power and a deal's potential for success.

In a conversation format bestselling business author Jim Collins, together with Suzy Wetlaufer, editor of the Harvard Business Review addressed the question "What catapults a company from merely good to truly great?" They examine how the most effective leaders succeed in driving their companies to superior performance over the long term.

"The answer to this question was unexpected, perhaps because one quality Level 5 leaders possess is humility. They don't strut or brag or otherwise draw attention to themselves," said Collins. "Paradoxically, the other bedrock quality of a Level 5 leader is an indomitable will. They are ferocious and fearless. These qualities together in one person are the essential ingredients for an unstoppable leader."

"HBR is delighted to join with BEA to host a symposium on business leadership and staying power in New York," Wetlaufer said. "These are timely themes, and grow increasingly resonant with each new set of headlines in the daily business section.”

The event also featured talks by David l. Hill, global managing partner, Solutions Engineering Service Line, Accenture; Richard Ketchum, resident and deputy chairman, The Nasdaq Stock Market, Inc.; and Bill Coleman, chairman and chief strategy officer, BEA Systems, Inc.

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
