Big Blue Here We Come! Deloitte pursues enterprise portal business while BEA pursues IBM Global Services

(January 15, 2002) - As part and parcel of its overall strategy to square off with IBM and leverage the BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform by bundling it as part of a total hardware/software/services solution, BEA Systems Inc. is entering into a partnership with Deloitte Consulting - a computer services giant in its own right.

The deal with Deloitte marks the final piece of BEA's plan to partner with each and every one of the world's largest computer services consultants. By doing so, BEA has of course set its sights specifically on Big Blue's lucrative "Global Services" operation. The partnership network it has built up already included, even before the Deloitte announcement, KPMG Consulting, Cap Gemini, Ernst & Young, CSC, EDS, Accenture, Andersen, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Such a strategy will permit BEA to introduce, like IBM, a single invoice, single source, single cost of computing for its customers. According to the terms of the latest agreement, Deloitte Consulting will start training its e-business technical practitioners on the BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform and will henceforth demonstrate built-on-BEA solutions through its global network of Solution Centers.

From Deloitte Consulting's point of view, the company already has a track record of successful deployments of WebLogic-based solutions, deployments that are up and running across all the verticals with which Deloitte is involved, from telecommunications to government. "This new strategic alliance," said Michael DeBellis, Deloitte Consulting principal and e-business chief technology officer, "enables us to build on these successes and to extend into new areas that take advantage of the expanded capabilities of the BEA E-Business Platform, such as enterprise portals."

"BEA is the clear market leader in the J2EE application server space," he added - an assertion borne out by the fact that Deloitte Consulting has recently implemented several large BEA-based solutions for major clients, including Longs Drugs, XO Interactive, and DIRECTV.

"As a leading provider of professional services," said John Gray, BEA's vice president of global alliances, from the company's San Jose headquarters, "Deloitte Consulting is well-positioned to create repeatable solutions for organizations that want to benefit from a Web-enabled technology infrastructure."

Though she didn't mention IBM by name, Rauline Ochs, senior vice president of BEA's worldwide partner initiatives, explained the strategy to Reuters as follows. "It puts us on equal footing to lead with a services practice and with hardware/software/services underneath." This was the best way to maximize the BEA WebLogic E-Business Platform's strengths, she continued, since it "really puts our competitors in the position of having to compete with us on product capabilities, product pricing and other places where frankly we feel we're superior."

At the heart of the platform, the BEA WebLogic Server - named the market leader by every major industry analyst firm tracking application servers - remains the jewel in the company's crown. Ochs acknowledged however that more of BEA's revenue would in future be coming from service partners like Deloitte Consulting.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
