Quizzed re: JBoss Port, BEA Exec Says It Doesn't Solve the "Fundamental Problems"

Eric Stahl, director of product marketing, BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic jRockit, is undaunted by a recent press release from JBoss lauding the advantages of their free port migrating apps from WebLogic to JBoss 3.0. "We have seen these types of marketing promotions from other vendors over the years, which comes with the territory of being the leader in our space. Unfortunately they don't solve the fundamental problem that people are using WebLogic for - integrating their applications, and doing so on one unified, extensible platform," commented Eric. "What this platform delivers is enterprise-level functionality that's easier to use and allows businesses to realize a long-term lowered total cost of ownership (TCO)," he continued.

In the announcement, JBoss Group LLC said, "The port allows organizations to obtain equal or better performance, security and developer productivity on the open source JBoss server without the licensing constraints and financial costs inherent to WebLogic."

JBoss group continued by stating that "a leading industry analyst organization predicts that open source will erode licensing fees for application servers in 2003. The firm expects cost-conscious software vendors to ditch expensive licensing deals with companies like BEA to gain access to source code and to save money."

Jason Westra, editor-in-chief of BEA WebLogic Developer's Journal, noted, "JBoss is a great application server, but I see BEA as competing at a different level, the 'platform.' A platform solution includes portal, commerce, integration, B2B, and Web services capabilities all bundled under a single security, development, and administrative model. That is what you get with the BEA WebLogic Platform. You do not get that with any other vendor in the market, including JBoss." (For more detail, see Jason's editorial, The BEA Slayer?", in WLDJ, Vol. 1, issue 8)

BEA is confident that BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 offers business real value, by providing superior integration capabilities, maximizing administrative and operational productivity, delivering Web service enhancements, and fully supporting up-to-date standards. IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How?
