BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 Now Available

(May 2, 2002) - BEA WebLogic Server 7.0?, the latest release of the most widely deployed application server and the foundation of the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform, is now available for immediate download.

BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 delivers robust features to radically improve developer and administrator productivity, tighten application security, and simplify integration. With more than 100 new features, including J2EE 1.3, enhancements focus on the following areas:

  • Powerful Developer Enhancements - Through enhanced server performance, as well as new graphical tools, utilities, and services, BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 is designed to shorten the time-to-market for application development. Key new developer productivity utilities include BEA WebLogic Builder and EJBGen, which facilitate development, assembly, packaging, and deployment of J2EE applications for the BEA WebLogic Enterprise Platform.

  • Greater Administrator and Operational Productivity - New graphical and command line tools and utilities make configuring an application deployed to a large cluster much easier than before, making it easier to give enterprise applications the scalability and reliability they require. More powerful monitoring metrics give administrators greater visibility into operations to help them reduce overall maintenance costs.

  • Web Services and J2EE Standards Support - BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 includes native support for the latest Web services standards, such as SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. Further easing the development of Web services, BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 offers new tools and services that simplify and accelerate enterprise Web services development by automatically exposing applications as Web services with virtually no additional skills or coding. BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 is fully compliant with J2EE 1.3.

  • Higher Level of Application Security - BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 features a new, redesigned security framework to enhance support for authentication, authorization, auditing, encryption and other critical security services. The new release also provides an integration point to easily "plug-and-play" market-leading security solutions. For example, customers can easily plug-in existing security solutions into BEA WebLogic Server. The new security framework also delivers tighter end-to-end application security, from the Web browser all the way to the back-end resources, and provides customers with a fully standards-based framework.

BEA WebLogic Server 7.0 is supported by a wide variety of third-party applications. It is complemented by the leading development tools, management frameworks and security products from Borland, Rational, Sitraka, TogetherSoft, and WebGain, for Java development tools; BMC Software, Computer Associates, Mercury Interactive and Wily, for testing, management and administrative solutions; and Baltimore, Entegrity, Entrust, Netegrity, PentaSafe, RSA Security, and VeriSign, which provide security solutions.

    IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
