New BEA Adapters and Portlets Boost Productivity, Lower Costs

New BEA Adapters and Portlets Boost Productivity, Lower Costs

(August 28, 2002) - To lower the cost of connecting enterprise applications, systems and its users, BEA Systems, Inc. will make available 30 new BEA-branded integration adapters for BEA WebLogic Integration? at the end of August, complementing more than 20 new portlets for BEA WebLogic Portal?, currently available from the BEA Portal Solution Center. This initiative will help customers achieve lower integration costs as they increase enterprise agility and accelerate business transaction flow and decision processes.

Increasingly customers are combining integration software, such as adapters and business process management, with portals and custom applications to allow broad sets of users to act on information within the context of their unique roles and interact with multiple back-end systems as if they were one. Traditional integration adapters have hampered this progress due to their high costs, complexity, and proprietary nature. But with standards, such as the J2EE Connector Architecture and Web services, the cost and complexity of application integration projects has been dramatically lowered, allowing customers to receive more comprehensive integration solutions at a better value. Combined with BEA's enhancements to the J2EE Connector Architecture standard, support for Web services, business process management, and business-to-business integration, BEA WebLogic Integration offers a broad enterprise integration solution on a single platform.

"BEA's new adapters provide the connections that enable systems to talk to each other, while the new portlets give them something to talk about," said Rick Jackson, vice president of product marketing, BEA Systems.

With the new adapters, BEA now offers more than 150 integration adapters. They provide a reliable, two-way dialog between applications, and map information to a standard format that can be used elsewhere - yielding a simpler, more efficient, and more valuable solution. BEA's adapters fall into four categories:

  • Application adapters for enterprise applications such as SAP R/3, Siebel, PeopleSoft, Oracle Applications, JD Edwards, and more;
  • Adapters for industry-specific compliance such as HIPAA, FIX, SWIFT and others;
  • Utility adapters for frequently accessed technologies such as RDBMS, SMTP, FTP, HTTP, and more; and
  • Technology adapters for legacy environments including mainframes, message queuing systems, EDI, and others.
The new portlets help speed time-to-market and boost productivity for customers by increasing employee and partner collaboration. More than 140 portlets from 44 vendors in areas such as analytics, collaboration, content syndication, search, and Web services are now available from the BEA Portal Solution Center(http://portalsolutions.bea.com). Of note are new portlets from Compoze Software and Venetica, available at no charge to qualified BEA WebLogic Portal 7.0 customers. Venetica's Content Provider for BEA WebLogic Portal includes a set of portlets designed to allow greater collaboration and integration with content stored on Windows-based file servers. Compoze Software's whiteboard and chat portlets provide real-time visual communication and collaboration

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
