Panasas Boosts Performance of ActiveStor Parallel Storage Clusters by More Than 50 Percent

Panasas DirectConnect10 Enables HPC Customers to Run Larger Models and Complete Faster Simulations via 10-Gigabit Ethernet Suppo

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Panasas, Inc., the leader in parallel storage solutions for high-performance computing (HPC) environments, today announced Panasas DirectConnect10, a new 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity solution that increases the performance of Panasas ActiveStor Parallel Storage Clusters by more than 50 percent. Panasas DirectConnect10 increases bandwidth from a single ActiveStor storage shelf to well in excess of 500MB/s. The Panasas DirectConnect10 option now provides customers the flexibility to connect Panasas Parallel Storage Clusters directly into their 10GigE switching infrastructure, which will significantly improve time to results and accelerate product development.

Panasas is scheduled to exhibit the new 10GigE solution at the Supercomputing 2007 (SC07) show in Reno, where it will showcase performance in excess of 2 GB/s out of just four Panasas storage shelves. These shelves are connected via Force10 S50 switches into 20 Linux-based servers from Penguin Computing. Panasas is exhibiting at booth number 1037.

"We've been working closely with Panasas for many years to provide an integrated 10 Gigabit Ethernet switching and storage solution to our joint customers, who care most about performance and reliability," said Eric Tom, vice president of corporate and business development at Force10 Networks. "For HPC environments that need to maximize application performance and uptime, the combination of Panasas and Force10 provides an ideal solution."

Panasas Parallel Storage Clusters already provide significant productivity gains for users of large compute clusters by providing parallel data paths between clients and storage. The addition of 10GigE connectivity further widens the performance gap between Panasas Parallel Storage Clusters and current NFS-based storage solutions. The higher performance Panasas solution is targeted at customers in oil & gas, manufacturing and government who need to get results fast and accelerate product development.

"The 50 percent performance boost enabled by our new 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity solution will allow our customers to run larger models and get their simulations completed noticeably faster," said Len Rosenthal, chief marketing officer at Panasas. "The combination of PanFS(TM), our parallel file system, and the new higher bandwidth ActiveStor Storage Cluster continue to extend Panasas' leadership in high-performance parallel storage."

The DirectConnect10 option will ship to Panasas ActiveStor Parallel Storage Cluster customers in Q1 2008. The DirectConnect10 option is certified with 10GE switching solutions from Force10 Networks, with planned additional certifications for Cisco Systems and Woven Systems.

If a machine can invent, does this mean the end of the patent system as we know it? The patent system, both in the US and Europe, allows companies to protect their inventions and helps foster innovation. However, Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be set to disrupt the patent system as we know it. This talk will examine how AI may change the patent landscape in the years to come. Furthermore, ways in which companies can best protect their AI related inventions will be examined from both a US and...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
