Sentilla Takes Curtains Off Pervasive Computing Platform at JavaOne Conference

Breakthrough Technology Puts Complete Java Platform On Smallest Footprint Computers

Today at the JavaOne conference, Sentilla unveiled its pervasive computing platform, a breakthrough in Java technology that paves the way for Java developers to solve problems as never before. Sentilla’s innovation allows tiny, dime-sized computers to run the same Java platform that powers computers tens to hundreds of times larger. Pervasive computers are used to prevent structure collapse, protect borders, reduce pollution, locate energy waste and discover countless problems before they impact human life or the planet. Sentilla gives Java software developers a powerful new way to solve those problems – and more.

“Sentilla's innovative platform is yet another example of how the Java technology ecosystem is expanding into new areas and enabling new levels of technological innovation. The dream of connecting millions of people and things through billions of tiny devices is now becoming a reality, as Java technology continues to help revolutionize the world in which we live today,” said Dave Hofert, group marketing manager, Java SE and Embedded/Real-Time at Sun Microsystems.

“Developers want to solve problems, not learn a new programming language,” said Joe Polastre, co-founder and chief technical officer at Sentilla. “Our challenge was to take an existing language designed for computers ten times as large and powerful and get it to work on tiny devices without any compromises. This is a culmination of nearly ten years of research and three years of development, and I’m very gratified that we have taken what was previously not considered to be possible and turned that into reality.”

Sentilla's breakthrough enables organizations to add local intelligence to objects through Java technology, a standards-based language known to millions of developers worldwide. System integrators and end customers can now evolve billions of resource-constrained devices into intelligent computers that can communicate, collaborate, and execute, giving those devices far greater functionality than ever before.

Sentilla is based on Java Platform Micro Edition (Java ME). The company’s award-winning Java technology is being featured in the Java Playground at the JavaOne conference and will be on display in Sentilla’s Booth in the Startup Alley, Booth 1224-2. The Sentilla Java pervasive computing platform for small computers will be available for purchase in late Q2 2008. Attendees of the JavaOne conference can obtain Sentilla’s Perk pervasive computing kit to sample the new technology for $199 at the JavaOne Show Device kiosk in the South Upper Lobby.

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The hierarchical architecture that distributes "compute" within the network specially at the edge can enable new services by harnessing emerging technologies. But Edge-Compute comes at increased cost that needs to be managed and potentially augmented by creative architecture solutions as there will always a catching-up with the capacity demands. Processing power in smartphones has enhanced YoY and there is increasingly spare compute capacity that can be potentially pooled. Uber has successfully ...

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
