Yanmar Adopts GXS Trading Grid(R) Logistics Visibility to Support Global Logistics Network

Major Engine Manufacturer Seeks to Increase Customer Satisfaction with Timely, Accurate Parts Delivery Information

TOKYO and GAITHERSBURG, Md., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- GXS, a leading provider of business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce solutions, today announced Yanmar Co., Ltd. (Yanmar) has deployed GXS' global logistics visibility solution, GXS Trading Grid Logistics Visibility, to monitor and gain insight into the transport status of maintenance and repair parts. Leveraging GXS Logistics Visibility, Yanmar is able to deliver timely, accurate information about the transport of spare parts from order to arrival to their customers. Launched in July 2008, the service has helped Yanmar increase customer satisfaction levels among its buyers since implementation.

Established in 1912, Yanmar developed the world's first commercially-viable, small-scale diesel engine in 1933. Today, Yanmar is a leading seller of industrial engines, agricultural equipment, construction machinery and marine products. With increased sales activity for the company's spare and replacement parts in multiple geographic markets around the world, Yanmar sought a company that could provide it and its customers with greater insight into the transport and logistics status of goods.

"There is fierce competition between companies in the global market, so having an edge, particularly in after sales service, is an unconditional requirement to succeed," says Masafumi Yoshino, executive officer of Yanmar's global customer service division. "In order to improve our customer service at Yanmar, we are building a streamlined parts supply network and developing various services. Global logistics visibility is a huge factor in all of this."

With GXS Logistic Visibility, Yanmar is able to improve inventory management by ensuring data accuracy of product demands and stock availability. In some cases, Yanmar may need to transfer products in a location with overstocks to locations with shortages. To achieve this, visibility throughout the transportation process is crucial. Previously, Yanmar had to manage more than a hundred freight forwarders worldwide on its own, a complex and time-intensive undertaking. Yanmar realized that it needed a global logistics visibility solution to manage this process and gain data insight into accurate logistics and inventory data.

"Through its selection of GXS, Yanmar has shown tremendous insight and advancement in the management of spare parts logistics. This is a huge challenge for many automotive and manufacturing companies. Yanmar is leading the charge in addressing it by deploying a viable solution that will not only serve its needs, but that of its customers as well," said Yoshiyuki Tanaka, president of GXS Japan. "We are proud of the work that GXS has done to make this project a success and we believe our strong local support team and truly global presence can shield Yanmar from the complexity of global logistics operations."

Yanmar uses GXS Logistics Visibility to gain real-time insight into global logistics operations from Japan to their distribution locations in North America, Europe and Asia and then to dozens of overseas dealers for its service parts. To construct this system in-house, Yanmar forecasted it would take several months to two years to build and connect with each freight delivery company's network. However, with GXS Trading Grid, the connection to each company took six months from start to finish. In addition, since there is no need to hire specialized staff for the project, the time and cost associated with development, implementation, operation and maintenance was significantly less.

"The current business environment changes at a dizzying pace, so IT systems must be designed to adjust accordingly and quickly," adds Sadayuki Nishimura, president of Yanmar Information System Services. "Therefore, it is necessary to understand what the company should develop on its own and what to outsource. If we use the GXS solution, we can easily deploy a robust system in a short amount of time that would take several years to build in-house. As a result, we can respond to our partners, our resellers and dealers quickly, which contributes toward improving our customer service."

GXS Logistics Visibility is part of GXS' suite of on-demand visibility solutions. Based on the GXS Trading Grid platform, these services provide customers and their global trading partners an on-demand, Web-based view into all aspects of the supply chain including trading partner networks and transactions, order lifecycles, logistics networks and inventory status. GXS Trading Grid visibility solutions enable customers to rapidly respond to changing customer demand signals and optimize sales through increased product availability and improved promotional planning. GXS also provides customers with current and complete status information on all in-transit shipments, including dynamic, estimated time of arrival, customs status, order and shipment correlation and supplier performance reports, leveraging a large network of global trade and supply chain participants.
