World Trade Week Events to Focus on Singapore: The Gateway to Southeast Asia

TROY, Mich., May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Businesses interested in reaching the more than 500 million people who make up the Southeast Asia market should consider attending World Trade Week 2005, May 11 - 13. Sponsored by the Automation Alley International Business Center and the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Commercial Service, this event will provide attendees with valuable insight on entering Singapore, considered the gateway to the markets of Southeast Asia.

Singapore is the world's 11th largest export market, the 12th largest trading partner with the U.S. and home to more than 1,500 American firms. "Many U.S. companies have learned that Singapore is the 'Asia for beginners,'" explained M. Dujon Johnson, director, Automation Alley International Business Center. "By attending the World Trade Week sessions, companies will learn how to enter this very attractive market, and even expand beyond there into the 10 countries of Southeast Asia."

World Trade Week, held annually in May, highlights the importance that exporting holds for companies in the U.S. U.S. Department of Commerce research shows companies that export products and services experience increased sales, greater job retention and even job growth.

World Trade Week sessions begin on May 11, with a networking reception and the presentation of Export Achievement Certificates to selected Southeast Michigan companies. This reception will be held at Automation Alley Headquarters in Troy. On May 12, a number of speakers, including Corson, Johnson, and George Ruffner, senior commercial officer, U.S. Embassy, Singapore, will share insight into the Singapore market. The afternoon of May 12, and all day May 13, Ruffner will be available for one-on-one meetings with those interested in further exploring business and exporting opportunities to Singapore. The conference will be held at Oakland University and the one-on- one meetings will be at the Pontiac U.S. Export Assistance Center.
